3-year-old girl in critical condition after being shot by her dad at Surprise home, police say
SURPRISE, AZ (AZFamily) — Surprise police say a toddler is fighting for her life after she was reportedly shot by her dad at a Surprise home Thursday evening.
Officers say they were called out to the area of 184th Drive and Bell Road, west of the Loop 303 freeway, around 6:30 p.m. after neighbors reported a man acting erratically. Officers say the man, identified as 48-year-old Dariusz Modrzejewski, then called 911 and started speaking about harming his family.
Crisis negotiators arrived at the home alongside SWAT crews, who then entered the home after hearing a gunshot inside. While in the home, they found a 3-year-old girl who was reportedly shot by Modrzejewski, who police have identified as her father. The girl was quickly rushed to the hospital and she remains in critical condition as of Friday afternoon.
Modrzejewski was taken into custody. He now faces several aggravated assault charges, including use of a deadly weapon, and assaulting a child under the age of 15.
No other information was released. A booking photo was not immediately available.
