1 hospitalized after reported shooting ends with car crash in Peoria

PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — One person is in the hospital after a shooting led to a car crash in Peoria early Thursday morning.

Peoria police say around 2:30 a.m., officers heard shots fired near 85th and Peoria avenues. Shortly after, 911 dispatchers received several calls from concerned residents about shots being fired in the area, possibly involving two vehicles.

Once officers arrived at the scene, they found a vehicle had crashed behind K-May Donuts & Bagels, which is located just north of where the original call was dispatched. Investigators say the vehicle appeared to have been struck by gunfire.

According to police, a bystander who was at the Park & Ride near 83rd and Peoria avenues was flagged down by an injured victim. The victim, who was under 18 years old, told the bystander he had been assaulted.

The boy was unable to provide more details to authorities and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Investigators later linked the injured victim to the vehicle that was found damaged behind the donut shop.

Officers found multiple shell casings along 85th Avenue. Investigators launched a drone unit to search for any possible victims or suspects but did not locate anyone else.

Arizona’s Family crews witnessed a large police presence and a damaged white sedan behind the K-May Donuts & Bagels. Evidence markers were littered around the donut shop’s parking lot.

Police were also taping off an area inside The Tallows at Peoria Apartments, which is located across the street from the shop.

Police say 85th Avenue was closed between Peoria and Grand avenues for hours before reopening around 6 p.m.Investigators are still working on collecting more information about what led up to the shooting. No arrests have been made at this time.

There is no threat to the community, as the shooting appears to be between suspects who know each other.
