PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Two elementary schools in Phoenix will be closed after a decision was made in an hours-long meeting on Tuesday.

The governing board elected to close Heard and Dunbar elementary schools due to budget cuts during a late-night vote. Now, these students will have to merge with other campuses.

Arizona’s Family has reached out to Phoenix Elementary School District officials for details about when the schools will close, as well as any statement that will be sent to parents.

Governing Board President Jessica Bueno said the decision was due to the district’s financial troubles, which she says are caused by state policies.

“We can’t pretend that we have money that we don’t,” Bueno said during the meeting. “We can’t pretend that our students are going to have the same resources if we keep all the schools open. We can’t control what the state is doing. They’re taking our money; they’re taking public funds and funding charter schools. They are continuously putting us in this position.”

Other school districts in the Valley have also recently made similar decisions to close schools.
