PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A newly obtained letter from the Isaac Elementary School District shows that families face even more challenges ahead.

According to the letter obtained by Arizona’s Family, the school district, which serves about 5,000 students in west Phoenix, intends to close two schools and the district’s online academy. The closures would take effect at the end of the current school year and impact those attending Moya Elementary, PT Coe Elementary and Isaac Online Prep Academy.

“Every student currently attending Moya Elementary, PT Coe Elementary, or IOPA will be provided with a new home school assignment to ensure they continue receiving a high-quality education in a welcoming and supportive environment,” the district wrote in the letter.

At this point, it’s unclear how many staff or faculty members could be impacted.

The following public meetings have been scheduled to discuss the district’s plans before anything is finalized.

  • Apr. 3, 5 p.m. – Public Meeting at Isaac Middle School
  • Apr 24, 5 p.m. – Public Meeting and call to the public at Isaac Middle School
  • May 15, 5 p.m. – Regular Board Meeting at Isaac Middle School

The move comes just weeks after the district came under fire for reportedly overspending nearly $30 million and falsifying financial records. Shortly thereafter, the district was placed into state control.

Ultimately, Tolleson Union loaned the school district $25 million at 6% interest with Isaac Middle School being used as collateral; that money was used to ensure teachers were paid during the financial crisis.

Parents who Arizona’s Family spoke with said they worried about getting their children to the new schools.
