ST. JOHNS, AZ (AZFamily) — Evacuations have been lifted after a fast-moving brush fire spread dangerously close to homes in a small rural community in Apache County.

A “GO” evacuation order had been issued for all residents on Water Street and the surrounding areas of St. Johns Monday afternoon.

As of 6 p.m., crews said forward progress has been stopped, but the blaze grew to 70 acres.

Crews are working through the night to monitor fire conditions in case evacuations must be implemented again. Firefighters say strong winds continue to pose a threat.

Earlier in the day, residents were asked to stay out to allow first responders adequate access to the area.

County officials are urging residents to sign up for emergency notifications through its “Smart911″ system.

“As a reminder, due to the vulnerability of Apache County’s landscape, we remain on READY throughout the entire county year-round. Please prepare NOW and not when emergencies strike,” the county wrote on social media.
