Firefighters gain ground on Horton Fire thanks to winter weather
PAYSON, AZ (AZFamily) — Firefighters are slowly making progress on the Horton Fire.
Officials said on Jan. 14 that the wildfire that started on Dec. 14 has burned 8,346 acres in the Tonto and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests and is 80% contained.
Approximately 230 firefighters are battling the blaze.
Tonto National Forest officials said the weather has helped crews fight the flames with colder temperatures despite the higher winds in the area.
Light winds and cool temperatures are expected to continue as personnel are downsized and crews continue to look for hot spots to ensure nothing escapes the containment lines. Crews are continuing to mop up along State Route 260, and officials say smoke is expected to be seen from the highway.
Crews will burn pockets of fuels inside the fire perimeter and hazardous areas while scouting and preparing the north and east sides of the fire.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office moved the following areas along the Forest Service Road 289 corridor back to “READY” status:
- Tonto Creek Estates
- Tonto Rim Christian Camp
- Tonto Fish Hatchery
- Zane Gray Cabins
The blaze started near Horton Creek Trail 292 in Horton Creek Canyon and is about three miles northeast of Tonto Creek Estates.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Officials urge the public to ensure their campfires are completely put out and to not leave them unattended in dry weather when no rain is forecasted.
