Death toll rises to 10 in Los Angeles-area wildfires; 10K buildings destroyed

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Officials said late Thursday that 10 people have now died in the major wildfires around the Los Angeles area that raged for a third straight day.
No names have been officially released, and it’s unclear which fires are responsible for all the deaths.
According to the Washington Post, an amputee and his son died in the Eaton Wildfire in Altadena.
Anthony Mitchell, 67, a retired salesman and amputee who relied on a wheelchair, lived in Altadena with his son Justin, in his early 20s and living with cerebral palsy. Another son, Jordan, also in his 20s, was in the hospital at the time, leaving no caregivers available, according to the Post.
The flames of the Eaton Fire are largely out in Altadena, but it’s raging in the mountains, according to satellite imagery.
Because of looting, a curfew was put into place for Altadena until dawn.
The FAA also said on Thursday a small drone crashed into a Super Scooper over the Palisades Fire. No one was hurt, and the damaged aircraft landed safely.
At least 10,000 structures, many homes, have burned in Los Angeles-area wildfires, officials said Thursday afternoon. More than 5,300 structures burned in Pacific Palisades
The fast-growing Kenneth Fire started in the late afternoon in the San Fernando Valley near the West Hills neighborhood and close to Ventura County. The evacuation order covered parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties.
More than 900 additional firefighters were deployed to battle those flames.
The orders came as Los Angeles County officials announced the Eaton Fire near Pasadena that started Tuesday night has burned more than 5,000 structures, a term that includes homes, apartment buildings, businesses, outbuildings and vehicles.
To the west in Pacific Palisades, the largest of the fires burning in the LA area has destroyed over 5,300 structures. Between the Eaton and Palisades fire more than 10,000 structures have burned.
All of the large fires that have broken out this week in the Los Angeles area are located in a roughly 25-mile band north of downtown.
The Kenneth blaze ignited less than 2 miles away from the El Camino Real Charter High School, where people are sheltering from the fire in Palisades. The two fires are about 10 miles apart.
More than 4,000 structures have been destroyed in the Eaton Fire in the Los Angeles area, as thousands more have burned in the Pacific Palisades community, fire officials said Thursday.
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said structures could include homes, apartment buildings, commercial buildings or even vehicles.
