Maricopa County shelter’s tips to find lost pets after New Year’s fireworks

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Maricopa County Animal Care and Control is preparing to be busy this New Year’s Day with pets that ran away from homes after being frightened by fireworks.

Unfortunately, MCACC says that most of the lost dogs that end up in the shelter do not have any form of ID, whether it’s a collar tag or a microchip.

“We are urging pet owners to remember to put their dog’s collar on with an ID tag and make sure their microchip information is up to date so we can get them back home as soon as possible,” MCACC spokesperson Kim Powell said.

Powell said pet owners should look around their homes because dogs don’t typically stray too far. She said flyers posted around neighborhoods work, too, as well as posting on social media.

MCACC has special holiday hours, opening at 12 p.m. on Wednesday to help owners reunite with lost pets.
