What to know before feeding Thanksgiving food to your pet
PHOENIX (AZFamily) —Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie are all things we enjoy for Thanksgiving, but while humans indulge in this delicious food, our furry friends face a minefield of hazards.
Pet emergency visits usually spike around this time of year, with dogs consuming more human food during the holidays.
Dr. Doug Patriquin, co-founder of Dr. Kelly’s Surgical Unit, says dog owners should be careful when giving their dogs bones or fatty foods.
Ingredients like raisins, onions, shallots, garlic and baker’s chocolate with high amounts of cocoa can be poisonous to dogs.
Instead, Patriquin says carrots and pumpkin puree are safe for dogs if you want a sweet treat.
It’s also important to check your household items. Patriquin says flowers like daffodils or lilies can harm dogs if they get ahold of them.
It is also necessary to create a safe space for your pets and ensure they don’t get stressed by the chaos and commotion that may come with a large Thanksgiving gathering. “Each pet’s a little different. You know your pet the best,” he said.
