‘It’s been a big rollercoaster’: Scottsdale animal shelter at risk of closing
SCOTTDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Desert Tails Shelter, a no-kill shelter in Scottsdale is at risk of closing its doors for good.
In July, the shelter experienced extreme storm damage that caused flooding throughout the building.
Right now, they say there just isn’t enough donations to keep them going.
“The thought of it going away is truly emotional. It’s been a big rollercoaster,” said shelter director Adama Pfaff.
Since 2018, Desert Tails has helped over 2,000 dogs from rural communities.
The shelter has suspended all intakes because of the possible closure. They have 30 dogs that need to be adopted out as soon as possible.
“We have to just focus on the dogs we do have. It’s not smart and it doesn’t benefit anybody bringing in more dogs. More mouths to feed, more medical costs. Things like that. So, it definitely hinders that,” Pfaff said.
The monthly overhead to keep the shelter running costs nearly $7,000. If things don’t change, they expect to close by the end of the year.
“We would really like to continue saving dogs. There are so many more out there that are not getting that help,” Pfaff said.
All dogs are spayed and neutered with shots and microchipping. Puppies are $350 and adult dogs are $200.
The shelter says any donations will also go a long way. For more information, click/tap here.
