FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AZFamily) — The High Country is getting hit with more snow. With the extra blanket of snow, Arizona Snowbowl in Flagstaff has extended its season for the third time this year to May 18.

While it’s not the longest the park has ever been open, with these extra weekends, it’s the most days of operation the park has ever had in one season.

For a Monday in May, Arizona Snowbowl had plenty of skiers and snowboarders. Kelly Woodruff from Flagstaff was one of them. She has been skiing at Snowbowl for 10 years and said she’ll take every opportunity to shred the slopes, especially this late in the season.

“This is such a gift, and it’s a little secret if you will, for people from Arizona, imagine saguaro cactus and not always the ponderosa pine forest, so just this is incredible,” Woodruff said.

While Arizona Snowbowl had its earliest opening ever this season, Flagstaff has had below-average snowfall. Snowbowl usually gets an average of 260 inches of snow, but this year, it has only received 193.

Bill Sortore from Williams said he’ll take any bit of snow. “The man-made snow has definitely changed everything,” he said. “We wouldn’t have been getting as many days in the season for sure. I come up and enjoy the man-made snow, sun or shine.”

But the snow makers haven’t been turned on since late February. Angie Grubb with Snowbowl said their team has been working hard all year, and this snow is the cherry on top.

“Our grooming team has come in and maintained that snow throughout the year, and so that’s the reason we’re still open right now and have such incredible conditions,” Grubb said. “We are feeling awesome at Arizona Snowbowl. There is so much excitement going on.”

Bonus weekends have been added for the next two weeks, and the closing day is currently scheduled for May 18th. Last year, the park had the latest closing day ever on June 1. However, snowboarders like Genie Vogelsang are just happy to have snow in May.

“This is Arizona,” Vogelsang said. “I mean, you can in the same day, you can go swimming, hiking in Sedona, and then come up here to go snowboarding, it’s great.”

For the next two weeks, only one lift, the Arizona Gondola, will be open with access only to advanced terrain. Tickets for next weekend start at $24, and the last weekend starts at $19 if you buy in advance. Ticket information can be found here.
