May snowfall expected in northern Arizona, but how common is this?
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — With a cooler weather pattern taking over by Sunday into early next week, it’s possible some late-season snow will be deposited in parts of the Arizona high country. This includes the Flagstaff area, which has at least the chance of some May snow next week.
May snow in Flagstaff is not unheard of. In fact, Flagstaff averages 1.1 inches of snowfall during the month of May.
But when was the last time measurable snow actually coated the streets? It was six years ago, on May 23, 2019, with a daily total of 0.6″ inches of snow.

When is the typical last day of the season for measurable snowfall? Since 1898, the average last date is April 24.

Has this average last date changed over the years? Not really. Since 1990, the average last date of measurable snow in Flagstaff is April 23, just one day earlier compared to the 1898 average.
The latest day in the season ever for measurable snowfall in Flagstaff is June 8, 1907, with 0.5″ inches of snow!

Back to this century, we will monitor the chance of snowfall from Sunday through early next week. While some accumulation is possible, it’s hard to get snow to stick this time of year.
Therefore, it’s possible that you may see some snow flying in the Flagstaff area that never accumulates. Either way, check back for updates because even a little snow can make the roads slick, especially if you are not expecting it.
