YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — A disturbing discovery was made at a Yuma motel on Thursday morning when a worker found a dead baby boy inside a garbage can.

Police were called out to the Best Western on Castle Dome Avenue, near Interstate 8 and U.S. 95, around 10:45 a.m. They were taken to an outside garbage can that had the body of a newborn. Investigators believe the victim was placed into the trash bin between 10 p.m. on Wednesday and 10 a.m. Thursday. Officers are calling it a suspicious death.

Police said there are no suspects and an investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Yuma Police Department at (928) 373-4700 or 78-Crime at (928) 782-7463 to remain anonymous.

The Yuma Police Department also reminded Arizonans about the state’s safe haven law. Arizona has places where mothers can safely and anonymously give up their babies without fear of prosecution. Those include:

  • Any hospital
  • Any ambulance
  • Any designated adoption agency
  • On-duty fire stations
  • Any designated church
