YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — U.S. Border Patrol Yuma Sector has officially begun installing new border wall panels along the Arizona-Mexico border. Installation of new 30-foot panels began Friday in a remote desert area 50 miles south of Wellton.

This marks the first construction in the area in four years, as all projects were halted during the Biden administration. Now, with approval to move forward, Border Patrol is resuming key border security initiatives.

For the Yuma sector, it begins with filling border gaps along the Arizona-Mexico border. Yuma Border Patrol has identified seven gaps in their patrol area that will see new construction.

The exact number of miles to be completed remains unclear, but Yuma Border Patrol has long aimed to close these vulnerable gaps. It’s a project originally planned during the first Trump administration and it is now moving forward under the president’s executive order for “Securing our Borders.”

On top of new border panels, the Yuma sector began adding concertina wire to sections of the border wall in San Luis, Arizona. CBP agents say the wire is meant to beef up security and deter people from climbing over the fence.

The added border security measures come when apprehensions at the Southern border are at record lows. Nationwide, there were 11,000 apprehensions in February, a significant drop compared to nearly 200,000 during the same month last year.
