YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — President Donald Trump is renewing his threat to impose steep tariffs on imported goods from Mexico, and that isn’t sitting well with Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs.

Mexico is Arizona’s largest trading partner, so these tariffs could have a significant effect on the state’s economy.

During her State of the State address in Yuma on Thursday, Hobbs stressed the importance of Arizona’s relationship with its border neighbors and warned that tariffs could negatively impact the state’s economy.

“That is our number one trading partner, it is obviously very important,” said Hobbs. ”They’re going to be devastating. It’s gonna be passed down to consumers. It’s not going to make groceries more affordable for sure.”

The governor has also expressed that tariffs threaten critical industries in Arizona, such as semiconductor manufacturing, a sector where the state has made significant strides.

It was also the main reason for her visit to Yuma on Thursday. She celebrated the groundbreaking of Arizona Western College’s new manufacturing facility.

“This facility is going to offer training in electrical technology, advanced manufacturing, broadband, fiber optics and solar installation. These are good stable, family sustaining jobs,” said Hobbs, who explained these are jobs shaping Arizona’s future.
