With measles cases reported in US, here’s how to know if you’re protected
Doctors agree vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your family.
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The latest CDC numbers in the ongoing nationwide measles outbreak show at least 800 cases in 25 states, but still none are reported in Arizona.
Doctors agree the best way to protect yourself and your family is the vaccine, but since most receive a measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine as a young child, you may not be aware of your vaccination status.
Dr. Frank Lovecchio joined Good Morning Arizona on Tuesday to talk about how to track down your vaccination records.
“Arizona’s been lucky,” Dr. Lovecchio said about rising measles cases. “The states around us have it, but we don’t.”
He said one way to know which vaccines you have is by getting a simple blood test. You can also just get another vaccine, which Dr. Lovecchio said is one of the easiest ways to make sure you’re protected. He said the most common side effect from a second vaccine would be injection site pain.
For children born more recently, pediatricians now submit records electronically to a state database from where records can be pulled.
Dr. Lovecchio said parents can also print out their children’s vaccination records for easy access.
