Couple gets married at Phoenix Kidney Walk after finding out fiancé is donor match
PHOENIX (AZFamily)—The annual Phoenix Kidney Walk by the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona helps raise awareness for kidney disease, which affects 37 million Americans.
However, the event had an extra special meaning for a Phoenix woman who found a perfect match in her fiancé - literally.
Jessika Steier has been dealing with kidney disease since she was 20 and has been on the transplant list for the past 10 years. She has been volunteering with the organization for seven years.
“The kidney foundation does so much for so many people,” says Jessika.
Jessika’s boyfriend, Joey, surprised her with a proposal during last year’s Phoenix Kidney Walk. Now, she and her fiancé will come full circle and get married after Sunday’s walk. Not only will the pair tie the knot, but Joey will soon give Jessika a new gift in life.
On Valentine’s Day, Joey surprised Jessika by revealing that he had been tested to see if he could donate a kidney to her, and he turned out to be a match.
After the walk, Jessika will change into her dress, and her mom will do her hair and makeup for the big moment hosted by the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona.
“I’m in shock of it all. It’s amazing, and I’m honored that they would do this for me,” said Jessika.
Congratulations to the newlyweds, Jessika and Joey!
