PHOENIX (AZFamily)—Maricopa County announced Wednesday that it would be giving more than four million dollars to non-profits and organizations that help people during drug overdoses.

The cash comes from a settlement after Arizona was one of the states that sued pharmaceutical companies for mishandling opioid prescriptions. Seventeen Valley groups will receive the money next week.

Maggie’s Place is one of the Valley nonprofits getting cash. They’ll receive more than $220,000 to help them develop treatment plans for moms and families.

The CEO, Laura Magruder, said she is grateful they got a boost from this settlement. She says they rely on donations and grants to provide services.

“Every mom that joins us in a home crafts their own individualized plan of how she wants to move through her pregnancy and what she sees with her baby,” Magruder said. “Our goal is to help them stay on that path and stay on the journey with them.”

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Thomas Galvin said, “The opioid and polysubstance use crisis continues to impact families across Maricopa County, and these funds allow us to take meaningful action,” he said. “Providing more resources to organizations who are on the front lines of this battle, we are building a stronger, more coordinated response to help those affected.”
