Brace for weekend heat as First Alert Weather Days declared for Phoenix
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A strong ridge of high pressure building into the western third of the country will bring warmer-than-average temperatures to Arizona through the weekend. In the deserts, we’re looking at highs in the 102-105 degree range for Friday through Sunday.
In the mountains, look for highs in the 70s and 80s. No rain is forecast for the state. We have issued a First Alert Weather Day for the unseasonal heat on Saturday and Sunday, but no heat warnings are anticipated. It’s just a heads up for a hot weekend ahead. Saturday will also be a fairly breezy day statewide, including around metro Phoenix.
The heat won’t last long. By Monday, a storm system developing over Alaska right now will move toward Arizona and bring much cooler temperatures. By Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, we’ll see highs in the deserts in the upper-80s
On this day in 2011, the Horseshoe 2 Fire began in southeastern Arizona in the Chiricahua Mountains. By the time it was contained in June, it had consumed over 222,000 acres and was Arizona’s fifth-largest wildfire.
